What a timing belt actually does
The timing belt keeps your engine's crankshaft and camshaft turning in precise sync so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment. It's a rubber-and-fiber toothed belt that wears out on a schedule — unlike a metal timing chain, which usually lasts the life of the engine. If you're not sure which you have, your owner's manual or a quick VIN lookup will tell you.
Belt
Rubber, quieter, cheaper to make — but wears out and must be replaced on an interval. Common on many 4-cylinder engines.
Chain
Metal, driven by engine oil, typically lasts far longer. Failures are rarer and usually tied to neglected oil changes.

Warning signs of a failing belt
A timing belt can fail with no warning at all — but when there are symptoms, these are the ones to act on immediately.
Ticking noise from the engine
A worn belt or failing tensioner can produce a rapid ticking or clicking from the front of the engine.
Engine won't start or turns over oddly
If the belt has slipped or snapped, the engine may crank without starting — or not crank normally at all.
Rough idle or misfire
A belt that's stretched or has lost teeth throws off valve timing, causing vibration, shaking, or misfires.
Oil leak near the timing cover
Leaking oil around the front cover can degrade the belt and is worth inspecting before it becomes a failure.

When to replace it
Two numbers decide it: your mileage and the belt's age. Whichever comes first wins.
Mileage: 60,000–100,000 miles
The exact figure is set by your manufacturer and printed in the owner's manual. Don't guess — intervals vary widely between makes and even engine options.
Age: about 7–10 years
Rubber hardens and cracks with time, not just use. A low-mileage car that's a decade old still needs the belt done.
If the belt snaps, valves bend
On an interference engine the pistons and valves share the same space at different moments. Lose timing and they collide — bending valves and sometimes destroying the engine. On these engines, replacing on schedule isn't optional.
If the belt snaps, the engine just stops
Here the pistons and valves never occupy the same space, so a broken belt leaves you stranded but usually doesn't damage the engine. You'll still want a tow and a new belt.

What it costs
Timing belt jobs are mostly labor — reaching the belt often means removing covers, mounts, and accessory belts. These are typical ranges; your make, engine, and shop rates move the number.
The takeaway: doing the belt on schedule is a few hundred dollars. Skipping it on an interference engine can cost more than the car is worth. If the water pump is belt-driven on your engine, replacing it at the same time is almost always cheaper than paying the labor twice.
